Machine learning seems ubiquitous these days. The technique—which allows computers to automatically convert data into knowledge and action—is being used to train everything from internet search engines and self-driving cars to facial recognition systems and voice assistants such as Siri.
Since its public launch in April 2016, Break Through: The Caltech Campaign has broken Institute fundraising records. While Break Through looks to secure Caltech’s future as a source of discovery for the world, the campaign already is making an imprint on campus and beyond by supporting Caltech people who are pursuing big questions and bold ideas.
This month, 40 Techers traveled to the Grace Hopper Celebration—the world’s largest gathering of women in technology—thanks in part to donations from Caltech alumni who are members of Caltech’s Information Science and Technology (IST) Advisory Council. The donors covered the cost of attendance for many of the students who participated.

Today, Caltech will formally launch Break Through: The Caltech Campaign. This ambitious $2 billion fundraising initiative will enable the Institute to spur the most innovative and promising research, prepare students to become leaders in science and society, and help secure Caltech’s place as an engine of discovery for generations to come.
